Symbiosis
The story Symbiosis was the final project I drew up for Scopey’s Star Trek Fleet Command. A twenty-mission epic spanning two releases over two months, it introduced a group of brand new characters - in this case a gang of rogue treasure hunters led by a non-caucasian female Trill called Masriad Vael - with a twist on established Trek lore and the return of an old adversary.
The story was introduced to players with the following summary:
“Joined Trill Masriad Vael is the leader of a rogue, ragtag group of alien outcasts made up of a Cardassian safecracker, an ethically suspect Andorian scientist, a Kreyanthan religious exile and polymath, and a devastatingly provocative Deltan male. Operating at the edges of the law, they travel the stars using their skills to liberate some of the galaxy’s rarest and most valuable items from the galaxy’s most undeserving.
During one operation, Masriad collapses. Something is happening to the barriers between universes, something which, due to Masriad’s unique biological nature, is affecting her profoundly. Her extra-dimensional sensitivity leads her to a man who has fallen through the barriers from another dimension, bringing disturbing news of a catastrophe facing the entire multiverse, something called the Symbiosis Event.
The Symbiosis Event will cause every dimension to collide and fall into chaos. The galaxy’s major empires are too interwoven in the history of their dimensions to do anything but cause further damage if they intervene. If Symbiosis is to be stopped, it must be by someone small enough to slip under the radar. Someone like Masriad.
She is about to discover that it’s not always Starfleet captains who must save the universe.”
Below is the first objective of the story’s first mission (each mission contains five objectives), in this instance to scout out the mansion of galactic oligarch in order to steal a sculpture. As was often the case with my missions, especially the much longer core mission stories, I played with a narrative approach that ignored the wider arc of the story in favour of an extended prologue, in order to give players aims to accomplish within a framework of introducing characters and personality traits in such a way that players are immediately drawn to them and invested in what will happen to them.
As the mission progresses, our gang of unlikely heroes find themselves in a galaxy of merging dimensions where parallel versions of familiar characters enter the picture to cause havoc and sow confusion. Below is a section of the story from the second part of the release where Masriad and her crew encounter one of Star Trek’s most famous faces.
